Cook Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded and brought to room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 pound mild ground sausage preferably at room temperature
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted
  • cups self-rising flour such as White Lily
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper ground
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, thoroughly stir together the self-rising flour, dried parsley, salt, freshly ground black pepper, and cayenne pepper until the seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the flour.
  • Place the shredded cheddar cheese, mild ground sausage, and melted butter in a large bowl. Add the prepared dry mixture.
  • Using your hands, gently work the ingredients together only until everything is evenly combined. Take care not to overmix, since excessive handling can produce firmer sausage balls.
  • Pinch off small portions of the sausage mixture, or portion it with a small ice cream scoop, to create pieces approximately 1 inch in diameter.
  • Roll each portion lightly between your palms until rounded and smooth.
  • Set the formed sausage balls slightly apart on a baking sheet fitted with a baking rack. The rack allows hot air to circulate beneath the sausage balls and encourages more even browning.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 25 minutes, or until the sausage balls are golden brown and completely cooked through.
  • Remove them from the oven and allow them to cool briefly on the rack before serving.
