Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons cream cheese brought to room temperature to soften for effortless spreading
  • Baby lettuce leaves for a crisp, fresh layer
  • 6 slices cheddar cheese preferably a good-quality medium cheddar that melts well
  • 8 slices deli-style ham
  • 4 teaspoons mustard using either Dijon or yellow mustard
  • 6 slices soft bread such as white sandwich bread or brioche

Instructions

  • Combine the softened cream cheese with the mustard in a bowl. Stir thoroughly until the mixture becomes smooth, uniform, and fully blended.
  • Set this mixture aside to use as the seasoned spread for the sandwiches.
  • Coat each bread slice with a thin layer of the cream cheese and mustard mixture, using approximately half of the prepared spread.
  • On the first bread slice, arrange 2 slices of cheddar cheese, followed by 1 or 2 slices of ham and a layer of baby lettuce leaves.
  • Position the second bread slice over the first layer. Add 1 slice of cheddar cheese, followed by ham and lettuce.
  • Finish by placing the third bread slice on top with its spread-coated surface facing downward. Press the completed sandwich gently so the layers remain secure.
  • Repeat the same assembly procedure with the remaining 3 bread slices and the rest of the ingredients to prepare the second layered sandwich.
  • Place 6 toothpicks into each sandwich half. The toothpicks will hold the layers together and provide guides for easier portioning.
  • Cut around the toothpicks so that each half produces 6 individual mini sandwiches.
  • Each complete layered sandwich will therefore yield 12 bite-sized portions, giving 24 mini sandwiches from the two assembled sandwiches.
  • Serve them as bite-sized party snacks or as a playful, conveniently portioned lunch.

Notes

Dijon mustard or standard yellow mustard may be used. Soft white bread or brioche works particularly well for the layered sandwiches, while medium cheddar provides a pleasant texture and melts well if desired. Softening the cream cheese to room temperature makes the spread easier to combine and apply evenly.
