Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1 box about 15 oz spice-flavored cake mix
  • 1 cup chilled milk
  • 1 box 3.4 oz instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 cup pure pumpkin puree

For the Optional Drizzle:

  • 1/4 cup prepared cream cheese frosting

Instructions

  • Heat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Lightly coat a 9 × 13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set it aside.
  • Place the vanilla instant pudding mix and cold milk in a large mixing bowl. Whisk or stir until evenly combined and the mixture begins to thicken.
  • Add the pumpkin puree, followed by the dry spice cake mix. Stir thoroughly until a smooth, uniform batter forms. Do not add the eggs, oil, water, or any other ingredients called for on the cake mix package.
  • Transfer the prepared batter to the greased baking dish and spread it into an even layer with a spatula.
  • Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. Begin checking for doneness around the 30-minute mark; the cake is ready when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool in the baking dish for at least 15 minutes.
  • Place 1/4 cup cream cheese frosting in a small microwave-safe bowl. Heat for 10 to 15 seconds, then stir. If necessary, warm it for a few additional seconds until the frosting reaches a fluid, drizzle-friendly consistency.
  • Spoon the warmed frosting over the cooled cake in an irregular decorative pattern.
  • Allow the drizzle to settle slightly, then cut the pumpkin pudding dump cake into portions and serve.
