Ingredients

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 4 tablespoons melted unsalted butter
  • 3 medium sweet onions Vidalia recommended, peeled and sliced into ¼-inch thick rounds
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to your preference
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano optional
  • ½ cup finely grated Parmesan

Instructions

  • Set the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9×13-inch baking dish by greasing it lightly.
  • Spread the onion slices across the base of the baking dish in an even layer, gently pulling apart the rings to help them cook thoroughly and absorb seasoning.
  • Pour the melted butter evenly over the onions. Follow by sprinkling the garlic powder, paprika, oregano (if using), and a touch of salt and pepper over the entire surface.
  • Disperse the cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses evenly across the top of the seasoned onions.
  • Place the dish uncovered in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbling, and lightly browned.
  • Allow the gratin to rest briefly before serving. Pairs excellently with grilled meats, barbecue favorites, or as a flavorful side for casual gatherings.
