Key Ingredients for Frosted Coffee Brownies

Brownies

All-purpose flour – Creates the base structure, giving the brownies their signature chewy texture.

Unsweetened cocoa powder – Infuses a deep, rich chocolate flavor that pairs beautifully with coffee.

Coffee extract (or instant coffee) – Enhances the chocolate, adding a subtle yet distinct coffee note.

Granulated sugar – Sweetens and balances the bitterness from the cocoa and coffee.

Unsalted butter – Adds richness and moisture to the brownies, ensuring a tender crumb.

Vanilla extract – Complements the coffee and chocolate, rounding out the flavors.

Eggs – Binds the ingredients together and provides structure to the brownies.

Baking powder – A small amount of leavening agent ensures the brownies aren’t too dense.

Salt – Balances the sweetness and enhances the overall flavors.

Coffee Frosting

Unsalted butter – The creamy base for the frosting, making it smooth and spreadable.

Powdered sugar – Sweetens and thickens the frosting to a perfect consistency.

Instant coffee granules – Dissolved in cream, it imparts a bold coffee flavor that elevates the frosting.

Heavy whipping cream – Adds the perfect creamy texture to the frosting, giving it a silky finish.

How to Make These Delicious Brownies

Steps for Baking Frosted Coffee Brownies

Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) and preparing an 8-inch baking dish with non-stick spray or parchment paper. This ensures the brownies don’t stick.

Melt the butter in the microwave, then transfer it to a large mixing bowl. Stir in the sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until fully incorporated. Gradually add the dry ingredients, including the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder, stirring until the batter is smooth and well-combined.

Pour the batter into your prepared baking dish and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Once baked, allow the brownies to cool completely before frosting.

For the frosting, dissolve the instant coffee granules in the heavy cream and set aside. Beat the unsalted butter in a separate bowl until light and fluffy, then gradually add the powdered sugar. Slowly pour in the coffee-infused cream and mix until you achieve your desired frosting consistency. Generously spread the frosting over the cooled brownies, slice, and enjoy!

Tips for Perfect Frosted Coffee Brownies

To enhance the coffee flavor even further, consider using espresso powder instead of instant coffee granules. The stronger flavor adds depth without overpowering the chocolate.

For those who prefer a lighter frosting, start with 2 tablespoons of cream and add more as needed until the desired consistency is reached.

If you’re looking for a touch of texture, fold in chocolate chips or chopped nuts into the brownie batter before baking. This adds an extra element of crunch and richness to complement the smooth frosting.

How to Store Your Brownies

Frosted Coffee Brownies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you’d like to keep them fresh longer, store them in the refrigerator for up to a week.

To freeze, wrap individual brownies tightly in plastic wrap, then place them in an airtight container or freezer bag. They will last for up to 3 months in the freezer.

When you’re ready to enjoy them again, simply thaw the brownies at room temperature for a few hours or microwave them for a quick treat.

Frosted Coffee Brownies FAQ

How do I mix the brownie batter so it turns out right?

Start by combining the melted butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and coffee until smooth. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder. Gently stir the dry mixture into the wet ingredients just until no streaks of flour remain. Avoid beating the batter too long, or the brownies can turn out dense and tough instead of fudgy and tender.

Can I use espresso powder instead of instant coffee or coffee extract?

Yes, espresso powder works really well in these brownies. It has a stronger flavor than regular instant coffee, so you can start with about the same amount called for in the recipe and know you’ll get a nice, bold coffee taste. If you prefer a gentler flavor, use a little less the first time and adjust to your liking the next time you bake them.

Can I bake these brownies in a 9-inch pan instead of 8-inch?

You can definitely use a 9-inch pan if that’s what you have on hand. The brownies will be a bit thinner and may bake slightly faster, so begin checking them a few minutes before the suggested time. Watch for set edges and a center that looks glossy but not wet. When a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs, they’re ready to come out of the oven.

Do frosted coffee brownies freeze well?

The brownie base itself usually freezes very well, but the frosting can sometimes change texture after thawing. For the best result, freeze the brownies unfrosted: let them cool completely, wrap them tightly, and freeze for up to a couple of months. When you’re ready to serve, thaw the brownies at room temperature, then prepare the coffee frosting fresh and spread it on just before slicing.

  1. I find it odd that these are referred to as frosted coffee brownies when there is no coffee in the brownies themselves. A more appropriate title would be Chocolate Brownies with Coffee Frosting. I was excited to see a coffee brownie, however that is not what you get here. It still looks delicious 😋

    1. The coffee is listed in the brownie ingredients but left out in the brownie instructions. I’m going to try to add it with the other wet ingredients and see what happens.

Great recipe! Except in your directions you forgot to mention the coffee extract or instant coffee in the brownie mix… it’s listed on the ingredients, but not in the directions, so I didn’t know to add it in there when I was following the directions. But overall pretty good recipe.
