Zutaten

  • 8 large eggs preferably freshly cracked
  • 2 cups Colby-Jack cheese grated from a block for optimal melting
  • 1 pound ground breakfast sausage
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tube 8 ounces refrigerated crescent roll dough, such as Pillsbury
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper preferably freshly ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Anleitungen

  • Prepare the oven and baking dish. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Thoroughly coat a 13 × 9-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set it aside.
  • Cook the breakfast sausage. Place the ground sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until no pink remains, breaking the meat into small crumbles as it browns so it can be distributed evenly throughout the casserole. Drain away the excess grease once fully cooked.
  • Form the crescent dough base. Remove the refrigerated crescent dough from its tube and carefully unroll it. Arrange the dough across the bottom of the prepared baking dish, pressing the pieces into place and firmly sealing the seams to create one continuous layer.
  • Add the sausage and first layer of cheese. Spread the drained sausage evenly over the crescent dough. Sprinkle 1 cup of the grated Colby-Jack cheese uniformly over the sausage, reserving the remaining cup for the topping.
  • Make the egg mixture. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper until thoroughly blended and smooth.
  • Assemble the casserole. Pour the prepared egg mixture evenly over the sausage and cheese layers in the baking dish.
  • Add the remaining cheese. Scatter the reserved 1 cup of grated Colby-Jack evenly across the surface of the egg mixture.
  • Bake. Place the casserole, uncovered, in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 35–40 minutes. Test the center with a knife; the casserole is finished when the knife comes out clean and no liquid egg remains.
  • Rest before serving. Remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to stand for 5–10 minutes before cutting. This resting period allows the filling to set sufficiently for easier slicing.

Fiesta-blend cheese or cheddar may be substituted for the Colby-Jack cheese.
